Fundraising Highlight: 'Making Strides' Against MS

Raising money to help create a world free of MS is a team- and community-wide initiative for Team Making Strides. Having raised over $50,000 in their history as a team, they work together every step of the way!

The team’s most successful fundraising event, resulting in nearly $5,000 annually is their multi-family yard sale. This event provides members of their community to do some spring cleaning for a good cause! The team begins collecting items about 3 months in advance, and asks every one of their members to reach out to family and friends for items to donate to the sale. Through word of mouth and advertising through flyers and local newspapers, they filled up nearly four trucks with donated items. Other keys to their success:

  • Get a large enough location to donate of give a discount on the space
  • Host a 50/50 or other type of event to collect additional funds
  • Allow buyers to make a direct online donation to the team in exchange for their purchases
  • Take leftover items to a local auction house

As another way to raise money, team captain Colleen suggests seeing if any of your team members live in a town that will donate money to non-profit organizations in exchange for cleaning up their streets. Colleen says, “A few short hours of walking and picking up the streets -- not only is it an easy way to earn bucks, but you're giving back to the community at the same time.”

How Your Fundraising Helps

The dollars you raise support research breakthroughs that change the world for people living with MS. Groundbreaking research, supported by the National MS Society, finds that gut bacteria may play a role in MS. Certain bacteria can encourage or suppress inflammation, according to some leading investigators. Gut bacteria may also influence whether pro- or anti-inflammatory types of immune cells circulate in the human bloodstream.

Sergio Baranzini, PhD, professor at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine, and Dr. Lloyd Kasper, professor at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, discuss their research findings in a recent issue of Momentum magazine.

"These results suggest that the microbiome has both the capacity to drive disease and to regulate disease," states Dr. Kasper. Learn more >
